EdEn welcomes the proposal made by the European Commission on the 31st of December to include nuclear activities within the “green taxonomy” under certain conditions. If this inclusion was confirmed at the end of the consultation procedure that has just been opened, it would increase the volume of low-carbon electricity available for the fight against climate change, and thus make it easier to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
This decision to include nuclear electricity in the green taxonomy should however be complemented with coherent policies in the building sector and in the transport sector. EdEn believes that too many of the directives and regulations proposed by the European Commission as part of the Fit for 55 package are currently based on provisions that impede the use of electricity of nuclear origin.
